Environmental Impact Assessment lies at the heart of our services.
Certain development projects need an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), the results of which are reported in an
Environmental Statement supporting the planning application. We support our clients throughout the EIA process.
Screening Study
Although some major development projects would always require an EIA, the majority of development
would only require an EIA under certain circumstances.
The process to determine the need for EIA is referred to as screening. With our expertise and experience we are able to
provide valuable support in negotiating with local planners to avoid the requirement of a formal EIA.
Scoping Study
The importance of a scoping report is to focus the further Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Statement
to the environmental issues that matter, thereby ensuring the efficient and effective use of resources. The advantage of
engaging in the formal scoping process is that a principal agreement on the approach will be reached with the LPA at an
early stage in the process. This greatly contributes to the reduction of uncertainty for the project progress.
Technical Assessment
The EIA process aims to predict the likely environmental impacts of the scheme during its construction and operational
phases. The probability, frequency and risk of impact occurring have to be assessed against the magnitude, severity and
significance of impact or the consequences if it does occur. Various assessment methods can be used depending upon the
specific requirements of the proposed development and the receiving receptor. Possible effects of consequences are
identified as adverse or beneficial, direct or indirect, short or long term, temporary or permanent.
Preparation of Environmental Statement
The results of the Technical Environmental Impact Assessment must be reported in the Environmental Statement and a
Non-Technical Summary. Both these documents are mandatory for EIA projects. The ES should be a coherent document that
describes the environmental status of the site, the impacts of the proposed development and mitigation employed in a
structured and consistent manner. The ES describes the baseline situation, potential impacts, mitigation and
residual environmental effects of the proposed development on the various topics. It also addresses the design evolution,
planning policy context and the interaction between the potential impacts within the proposals and other development.
A Non-Technical Summary of the ES should be provided that explains in clear layman terms the important environmental
issues surrounding the proposed development.
